‘Tis the season of GRATITUDE

November 29, 2017

We are finishing up a month that is based around “giving thanks” and now we roll into the “season of giving”. We just got done spending precious time with family and/or friends and being thankful for what we have.

Coming into the holidays though, we know all too well that life is busy. Life is chaotic. “I don’t have time.”  “I would love to, but I’m just too busy.” Those are common phrases that we hear and say. And guess what…for most of us, that’s all true.

By acknowledging that, can we also acknowledge that the REASON we’re busy and the REASON we don’t have time is because we are busy with a life full of blessings?

Running all around town for kids’ activities? Instead of being frustrated about the time spent driving, sitting and waiting, etc., be grateful for your children and that we live in a place that has activities and organizations for our children to be involved in.

Having to work late or put in extra hours? Be grateful that you are gainfully employed and have the opportunity to provide for yourself and/or your family, hopefully doing a job that you truly love.

Housework? Laundry? Lawn care? Be grateful for the roof of your head and possibly your families. Being able to provide a warm place to shelter from the cold weather.

It’s about changing our perspective. Not letting life overwhelm us. Slow down. Breathe. Take the time to truly appreciate all the things that we have and the opportunities that are available to us.

Studies show that having a mindset of gratitude can benefit us mentally, socially and psychologically.

Here are a few things to try in an attempt to slow the pace of life and truly live every day for all the good that it has to offer:

1) Keep a daily journal of three things you are thankful for. This works well first thing in the morning, or just before you go to bed.

2) Make it a practice to tell a spouse, partner or friend something you appreciate about them every day.

3) Look in the mirror when you are brushing your teeth, and think about something you have done well recently or something you like about yourself.

There’s an old saying that if you’ve forgotten the language of gratitude, you’ll never be on speaking terms with happiness.

Enjoy this season by being thankful, grateful and giving!
